International Sculpture Symposium Forma Viva. Slovenia 2011

Karen Macher Nesta from Peru is, in addition to two sculptors from Venezuela, the third representative of artists from South America to participate in the Forma Viva of Kostanjevica. The basic concept of her sculpture, which is the second moving sculpture in the Forma Viva open air sculpture collection, is its flexibility. Interestingly enough, the first mobile sculpture exhibited in the sculpture park of Kostanjevica, named Apotheosis of Bolivar, was created in 1982 by another artist from South America, namely by Carlos Medina from Venezuela; both have been placed in close proximity. The artist’s principle aim was to accentuate her sculpture’s tactile features and thus its interactive character. Visitors are allowed to touch its leaves and by manipulating them emphasize the sculpture’s flexibility, which is based on the constructivist approach of Laszlo Moholy – Nagy, one of the most prominent modernists. According to Nagy, the spectator should abandon the role of a mere static observer but adopt the kinetic energy of a sculpture and be transformed into a moving and relaxative creative force. This particular task of the moving force has been occasionally relegated to the wind, which adds an ecological dimension. In addition to swinging the transversal parts of the sculpture, the wind will also produce a sound by knocking them together in the center. This simulated heartbeat serves as a symbolic reminder that the nature around us is alive, as is alive the sculptural form symbolically represented in the very name of the Forma Viva symposium. The use of natural materials, their kinetic characteristics, and the creation of natural sound are regular features of Macher Nesta’s land art installations and reflect her commitment to ecological activism.

Una rueda que gira, que se mueve suavemente con el viento, generando energía nueva desde y con la naturaleza. Las plantas que están sobre la estructura de bamboo crecerán y cambiarán.Con suerte encontrarán la manera de vivir por sí mismas, haciendo crecer sus raíces hasta alcanzar el agua. Yo inicio el trabajo, la naturaleza lo terminará.

"Floating Garden"
A wheel that turns, moved smoothly by the wind, generating new energy from and with nature. Plants on the bamboo structure will grow and change. They hopefully will find the way to live by themselves, growing their roots until they reach the water. I start the artwork, nature will finish it.

Todo cambia a nuestro alrededor, todo sigue su curso natural. Es algo que no podemos controlar, tenemos que adaptarnos. Lo único que podemos hacer es proteger nuestro espacio, nuestro cuerpo, para poder utilizar la energía de lo que nos rodea a nuestro favor.

Quiero creer que todos llevamos un jardín dentro, que depende de nosotros regarlo y mantenerlo vivo como una metáfora de armonía con nosotros mismos. Quiero que el mío esté siempre verde, radiante. Pase lo que pase fuera, haré que permanezca intacto, como en un sueño.

Everything changes around us, everything follows its natural course. It is something we can´t control, we have to adapt. The only thing we can do is protect our space, our body, using the energy that surrounds us in the most positive way we can.

I want to believe that all of us have a garden inside; it depends on us to water it and keep it alive as a metaphor of harmony with ourselves. I want my garden to be always green, radiant. Whatever happens outside, I want to keep it intact, like in a dream.

Este lugar es un espacio natural a la altura del kilómetro 70 en Lima, cerca a la carretera camino al sur. Se había mantenido así, como un respiro, completamente natural hasta hace poco. Hace algunos días me enteré que estas formaciones rocosas tan especiales van a ser sacrificadas para construir un complejo de casas de playa. Es muy triste ver las divisiones marcadas en los cerros y el darse cuenta de que todo esto tan valioso va a ser destruido para que se enriquezcan unos pocos. El acto que realizo es para despedirme de este lugar, que probablemente cuando regrese ya no sea el mismo. Dejo flores a una roca como ofrenda a un lugar especial a punto de ser violentado por la ambición de los seres humanos.

This place is a natural space located in Lima, km.70, close to the highway heading south. It has been kept that way, like a breath, completely natural for some time. A few days ago I found out this special rock formations are going to be sacrificed to build a beach houses complex. It is very sad to see the divisions marked on the hills and notice all that, so valuable, is going to be destroyed just for the enrichment of a few people. The act I make is to say goodbye to this place that will probably not be the same when I go back there. I leave flowers to a rock as an offering to that special place on the verge of being violated in the name of human beings´s ambition.

Trabajo en conjunto con Karin Van der Molen (Holanda).

Karin Van der Molen (Holanda) y Donald Buglass (Nueva Zelanda) crearon un proyecto a través de Facebook en el cual solicitaban indicaciones a varios artistas para desarrollar su obra como máximo en un día y medio. Karin recibió mis indicaciones y realizó mi obra en Nueva Zelanda. Yo realicé la misma obra paralelamente en Lima, Perú.

Working together with Karin Van de Molen (Netherlands).

Karin Van der Molen (Netherlands) and Donald Buglass (New Zealand) created a Facebook project in which they asked for instructions to artists to develop their artworks in one day and a half. Karin got my instructions and made my work in New Zealand. I did the same work at the same time in Lima, Perú.

miedo, angustia, decepción, tristeza...sentimientos que uno quisiera que se fueran y que no vuelvan, pero siempre encuentran el modo de volver. De alguna manera nos hacen como somos. Lo que no te mata te hace más fuerte.

fear, anxiety,disappointment, sadness...feelings that one would like to go away and never come back, but they always ... find their way back. In some way they make us the way we are. What doesn´t kill you makes you stronger.

Existen pesos de experiencias pasadas que uno carga sin siquiera saber que se han vuelto tan pesados. Es importante detectarlos para liberar el cuerpo de esa carga que nos impide caminar erguidos.

There are weights of past experiencies that one carries without even knowing they have become so heavy. It is important to detect them to release the body from that weight that keeps us from walking straight.

In the ancient beliefs of the country where I come from, it is always important to thank the land and respect it, because the land is the one that gives or takes away. We can live in harmony with it and it would give us things to eat and live, but if we cause damage to it, it can tremble and cause us disgrace.

In my work, I use rabbits as a symbol of fertility because of their fast reproduction capacity. They are planned to be made with the earth that the land provides, and are going to last for a short period of time, in order to return to the earth where they came from. The act of making the rabbits is going to be like a ritual of fertility to ask the land never to stop providing us; it is an offering to live together in peace and harmony.
